About

Logan Ray

Hi, my name is Logan Ray, also known as Shark or “Sharkfencer” on socials. I discovered HEMA in 2021 when I attended my first class with Indes Ferox Gladio. This community has supported me through challenges with my mental health and has shown me the value of communication and connection.

Since then, I’ve become an avid competitor, coach, and leader in my club. In these roles, I’ve worked to improve communication between clubs across the Pacific Northwest and have helped organize multiple events.

My goal is to create a stronger, more unified HEMA community by providing a central space for sharing information on events, teaching methods, and resources for practitioners of all levels.

What I do

Over the past two years, I’ve worked to bring HEMA clubs in the Pacific Northwest together through Micro Tournaments, Fight Nights, and by serving as a resource for communication among clubs.

Through these efforts, I’ve met many incredible people—competitors, historians, combatants, and enthusiasts—all sharing one passion: HEMA.

My goal is to use this platform as the next step in simplifying communication between clubs regionally, nationally, and eventually globally.

If you’re interested in volunteering to assist, please reach out—I’d love to start that process with you.

Why I Created Open Water HEMA

I have created Open Water HEMA as a free resource for all HEMA enthusiasts. The goal is to provide a space where events of any size—ranging from international-rated tournaments to local fight nights—can be easily shared.

HEMA is full of knowledge and creativity, especially when it comes to drills. This site includes an expanding list of drills from around the world so that everyone has access to the wealth of training ideas our community brings out of us.

Everything on this site will always remain free. However, if you wish to support the costs of running the site and other community-strengthening projects, you can do so via Patreon. Supporting does not provide extra access to content, but offers recognition, advising, and assistance if needed.
